
The historical backdrop of pre-independence India and the civil unrest that ensues might entice some viewers to dip their toe into a movie industry that they are unfamiliar with. There is a touch too much slow-motion - albeit fitting for the melodramatic tone - and the derivative soundtrack features a motif lifted directly from Titanic that plays relentlessly throughout the movie. But thanks to a strong cast, for the most part, it plays out convincingly. As a result, it can feel a little off-kilter for Western audiences. This Bollywood movie is a big-budget affair and - one questionable CGI bull aside - is beautifully shot with a grand sense of scale. The key hook of the story - a woman befriending her friend's husband in order to marry him after her friend dies - is culturally very different from how it might play in a movie from the West.

In my viewing of Hunt for the Wilderpeople, I had to sit through an ad every 10 minutes but could skip the ad after five seconds. I also found a trio of excellent music documentaries: Muscle Shoals, The Wrecking Crew and Sound City. More in the mood for an '80s comedy? There's Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Spaceballs and Big Trouble in Little China. If you are up for some classic 1980s cinema, you can watch Arnold Schwarzenegger in the original Terminator or Sylvester Stallone in Over the Top.

You won't find any new releases and or any sense of organizational structure, but there are a few gems. The collection of free movies looks a bit like what you might find in a bin of old DVDs at a garage sale.
